Harold A. Barr, a long-time city school board member and former city councilman, died this morning at Whitehall Nursing and Convalescent Center after an illness of several months. He was 86. Barr, who lived at 654 N. President Ave., retired as manager at J.C. Budding Building Supplies in 1968. Barr's service on the city school board spanned the years from 1937 to 1958; he was president of the board from 1945 to 1948. He was a Lancaster City councilman from 1964 to 1968 and was president of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce 1949-50. In 1959, he served as a member of a commission appointed by the Lancaster County Commissioners to study the county hospital, home, and prison. Barr was also a member and a past president of the Lancaster Chapter, American Business Clubs. A graduate of Millersville State Normal School with the class of 1912, he graduate from Franklin and Marshall College in 1916 and Penn State University in 1917. He served as president of the Millersville Alumni Association in 1951. He was also a former member of the board of the Boys' Club of Lancaster, a member of Covenant United Methodist Church, and a member of Lancaster Lodge 43, Free and Accepted Masons. He served in the Chemical Warfare Service during World War I. Born in Lancaster County, he was the son of the late Christian E. and Lulu Shober Barr. Survivors, in addition to his wife, Mary E. Stauffer Barr, at home, include a son, H. William Barr, Canton, Ohio; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren, and brother J. Shober Barr, Lancaster. (Lancaster New Era - Feb 9, 1981)
