U.S. Congressman. He attended the Male Academy, Union University, graduated from the law department of Cumberland University in 1861, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Lexington, Tennessee. During the Civil War, he served as a Major in the 27th Tennessee Regiment, Confederate Army. After the war, he was Mayor of Lexington (1869-70), attorney general of the eleventh judicial circuit of Tennessee (1870-78) and a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives (1881-82). In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth Congresses, serving until 1887. After leaving office, he was a member of the Tennessee State Senate, in 1892, judge of the criminal court for the eleventh judicial circuit (1895-1901) and judge of the court of civil appeals from 1902, until his death.
