George was a career Navy enlisted man, achieving the rank - Chief Electrcian's Mate. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor onboard USS Helena CL-50 when the Japanese attack on Dec 7, 1941 happened. In 1942, he volunteered to change duty from surface ships to submarines. One of his submarines during the war was USS Tautog (SS-199). Tautog was credited with sinking 26 Japanese ships, for a total of 72,606 tons, scoring second out of all US submarines by number of ships and eleventh by tonnage, earning her the nickname "The Terrible T."
