Son of Hal and Lolo Long Murrell of Cooke Co., near Gainesville, TX, Tom was the youngest of five children. He came to Shreveport in 1935 to attend Centenary College of Louisiana and never left. During his long life here he was a Caddo Parish Constable, Justice of the Peace, livestock dealer and auctioneer, dairy farmer, plantation manager, rodeo man, stable owner, horse trainer, riding instructor, proprietor of "Pony Land" in Dixie Garden, and loose livestock man for the Shreveport Police Department and the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office. He was a frequent guest columnist for the Shreveport Times newspapers and in 1996 published a collection of autobiographical essays in a book entitled "Stories of the Life and Times of a Son-of-a-Cowman," dedicated to his beloved wife, Avis Elizabeth "Beth" (1918-1993), whom he married in 1939. They were the parents of four children.
