Edwin Schlesinger was born Heinrich Edwin Schliesinger on August 13, 1888 on the family farm in Brooklyn Township in Lee County, Illinois. His parents were Matilda née Heimann and Georg Schliesinger. Edwin had three older half brothers from his mother's first marriage to Johannes Schliesinger. After Johannes' death in 1884, his mother remarried to Johannes' younger brother, Georg Schliesinger, Edwin's father. He had one older brother from his mother's second marriage. The family would later add one more brother and a sister. The family attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Brooklyn Township and it was here that he was baptized on October 7, 1888. On September 12, 1912, he married Hedwig Minna "Hattie" Kessel. Their marriage was blessed with three children, one dying in infancy. Edwin passed away on November 16, 1963.
