Thomas Elliott Bobbitt was born on 01 Jun 1822 in Tennessee. He served
during the Civil War with the 14th TX Infantry, Co. D., as a drummer.

Biography: "Thomas E. Bobbitt came to Texas shortly after 1854 with his
wife Emily Elizabeth (Walker) and three children, Mary Emma, Nancy Lenora
and Henry Fountain. His last child, Louisiana, was born in Rusk Co., TX in
1859. Family lore says that Thomas and his brother, John Stephen Bobbitt,
were lured to Texas to manufacture shoes and boots for the railroad workers
in East Texas. Thomas briefly served as a private in the Confederate States
Army in the regiment that was recruited by Smith County planter Robert F.
Wyly from men of eastern Smith County and western Rusk County. Texas
Governor Edward Clark's regiment was formally organized May 5,1862 at
Belleview in Rusk County and was given the numerical designation of the 14*
Texas Infantry. Thomas, age 40, enlisted in this company on March 15,1862
as a drummer. In April 1862, the Confederate Congress passed the first
Conscription Act All men between the ages of 17 and 35 were obligated for
military service. As part of the act those men over age 35 were discharged.
Thomas Bobbitt was discharged from his regiment on July 1, 1862, because of
bis age. He also enlisted August 5,1863 as a private in Co. A, Texas State
Troops, Volunteer Corps, 5th Brigade, for six months at Henderson, Texas.
After rearing his family, he decided to move further west In October 1888,
Thomas, his wife and grown children and their families moved to the Stanger
Springs community in Van Zandt County. Thomas E. Bobbitt died on 27 Nov
1889 and was buried at Edom Cemetery. On April 28, 2001, 62 descendants of
Thomas E. Bobbitt met and dedicated a Confederate grave marker to his
memory in the Edom
