At the age of 16 he set off for America aboard the ship "Cleveland". He arrived at Ellis Island in New York on November 23, 1910. Records show that he was going to stay with his Uncle Johann Bruning at 44th St., New York City.
Sometime between 1910 and 1916 he married Margaret Krapf. They had two sons, Charles August born in 1916 and Frederick Andrew born 1919.
In the World War I Draft Registration Cards he is listed as living at 62 Schaefer St., Brooklyn, NY. It recorded his work as being in the Coal and Ice business. In the 1920 United States Federal Census he is listed as August Brunning and on the 1920 Census he is Gus Bruning.
August died suddenly on June 15, 1931 at the age of 37. He was survived by his wife Margaret and two sons, Charlie & Fred. He is buried in the family plot at All Faiths Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY.
