Private Fred C. Schwalbe, son of Friedrich Schwalbe and Emelie Zutz, was born in Rockland Township, near Collins, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, on February 6, 1875. He served in Company H of the 2nd Regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteers, during the Spanish American War and died on July 27, 1898 of typhoid fever at the old Civil War battlefield in Chickamauga, Georgia. He is buried in the family plot near his parents in St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery at Collins, Wisconsin.
