Amos Velorus Benson, a resident of the Del Norte and the community since the late 80s, died Monday after a period of failing health. Funeral services were held on Wednesday aftrnoono at the Del Norte Methodist Church with Rev. J. L. Chestnutt officiating. The Knights of Pythias lodge, of which Mr. Benson was a member, had charge of the rites at the cemetery.
Mr. Benson was born at Golden, Illinois April 19, 1859. At the time of his death, he was 76 years old.
Leaving Illinois when he was twenty-one, Mr. Benson came westward, travelling through Utah, Montana and Idaho. He was the first settler at Rexburg, Idaho. In 1887, he moved to Del Norte and has lived here since.
On November 28, 1888, he was married to Nancy E. Harvey who preceded him in death on November 14, 1898. There were four children born to this union, Mrs. Vasco Stone of Del Norte; Mrs. John Thompson of Lanark, Illinois; Mrs. Lawrence Wasson, now deceased, and a son, who died in infancy.
On April 20, 1904, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Eva Putman. Besides the widow and two daughters, he leaves to mourn his two stepsons, Elmer and Omer Underwood; a step daughter, Mrs. William Evans; eleven grandchildren; one great grandchild; two brothers, Luther E. Benson of Alva, Oklahoma; Seth S. Benson of Emmett, Idaho; and two sisters, Mrs. Charles H. Davis and Miss Loretta Benson of Golden, Illinois, and other relatives.
