Del Norte Prospector dated March 23, 1951
Funeral rites were conducted here Monday fternoon at the Burress Chapel for Mrs. Marie D’Avignon, 77, who passed away last midweek at Riverside, California. Interment was in the family plot at the Del Norte cemetery.
Marie Hansen D. Avignon was born March 4, 1874 at Fountain Green, Utah, the daughter of Christain and Annie Hansen. She was a member of a family of 13 children—seven brothers and five sisters. The family moved to Colorado in 1888, coming by covered wagon, from Provo, Utah. They first settled at Alamosa and later moved to Sanford.
Feb. 16, 1899, she was united in marriage to Joseph Ernest D’Avignon at Taos, N.M. They homesteaded on a ranch between Center and Saguache. To this union was born five sons and five daughters. Her husband passed away March 18, 1945. Since the time of his death she had made her home with her children, and the last year has resided in California.
She is survived by four sons, Ralph J., Monte Vista; Walter C., San Francisco; Joe E., Palmdale, California; Virgil K., Bowen; four daughters, Mrs. Pearl Maddux, Alamosa; Mrs. Margie Morgan, Cheny, Kansas; Mrs. Rose Munda and Mrs. Deloris Moore, Del Norte; three brothers, Chris, of Center; Andrew, of Alamosa, Ted, of Sanford; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Peterson, of Provo, and Mrs. Katie Maddux, of Alamosa; 18 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and many friends.
A son, Woodrow, and one daughter, Mrs. Violet Mapes, are deceased.
Rev. Dick Roper of the Monte Vista Methodist Church officiated. Pallbearers were Clarence Burks, Perry Dappen, Frank Bernard, Victor Anderson, James panel and Harold Moore.
