Bessie was born to John Christopher Cogle and Mary Ann Garner. Mary passed away when Bessie was only 4 years old, due to complications from childbirth. Bessie married Harry Daniel Apple on August 4, 1907. They lived in Indiana until about 1917, when they moved to Danville, Illinois. They lived there until the start of the Great Depression. They moved to Warsaw, Illinois as a result of Harry's search for work. She lived there until her death. To her and Harry were born 8 children, Lawrence, John Harold, Lowell, Vera Lucile, Floyd, Lloyd, Ross and Helen.
