William Branham Colgate died yesterday in a Richmond County hospital.
Mr. Colgate resided at 1151 William Drive.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, Aiken, with the Rev. Dr. William Johnston officiating.
A native of Madison, Ind., Mr. Colgate had lived in Aiken for 18 years. He was a 1924 graduate of Purdue University College of Pharmacy and taught at Washington State University. He served in research and management capacities for 41 years for E.R. Squibb Co. He was an adopted grandparent for the third grade at Lauren Street Elementary School. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, were he served as an elder, trustee and president of the First Tuesday Club. He was a member of the Aiken Artist Guild and director of the Aiken Area Council on Aging.
"Bill was a very special person," said Phyllis Pellarin of the Aiken Area Council on Aging. "He was an extraordinary man. He was one of the volunteers of the adopt-a-grandparent program for the third graders at Laurens Street. He used to read to them. And he took them artifacts from his trips--he was well traveled. The children loved it and he was good at it," she added.
"He also spoke to the sociology classes in high school and told them how it was to grow old. He was just a very, very special person. He was a man of highest integrity," she said.
Survivors include his widow, Alice C. Colgate; two daughters, Mary Virginia Chucka, Franklin Lakes, N.J., and Joyce C. Coates, Stony Brook, N.Y.; a son William A. Colgate, Sand Point, Alaska; and a sister, Ada C. Williams, Greencastle, Ind.
The family will receive friends in the church parlor after the memorial service.
Memorials may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church memorial fund or to the Aiken Area Council on Aging.
