BRIGADIER GENERAL JOHN A. ROBERTS

Retired Sep. 1, 1966. Died June 22, 2006.

John A. Roberts was born in 1917 in Beebe; Ark. He attended Beebe Junior Agricultural College at Beebe, Ark., from September 1935 to June 1937.

He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps Oct. 12, 1937 and attended the basic and advanced pilot training course. He graduated from Kelly Field, Texas, Oct. 5, 1938, was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Corps Reserve and assigned to Randolph Field, Texas.

During World War II General Roberts served in the Pacific Theater, flying 143 combat missions and 906 combat hours in B-17s and B-29s and participated in nine campaigns.

Since World War II he has served as comptroller and chief of staff of the Eighth Air Force, Commander of the 19th Air Division, Fort Worth, Texas, and has four times served as commander of the 7th Bomb Wing at Carswell Air Force Base, Texas. Between the tours of duty as commander of the 7th Bomb Wing, General Roberts served as chief of the Strategic Air Division in the director of requirement's office at Headquarters U.S. Air Force, as chief of staff, Fifth Air Force, Headquarters Far East Air Forces, and attended the National War College.

He attended B-52 training at Castle Air Force Base while commander of the 7th Bomb Wing at Carswell Air Force Base. General Roberts left the 7th Bomb Wing in January 1959 to become commander of the 4th Air Division at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., being promoted to brigadier general in August 1961.

General Roberts has been awarded the Silver Star with two oak leaf clusters, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters.
