OBITUARY OF LELAND A BAKER ...

Leland A Baker, age 86, of 1906 Colonial Drive, Pittsburg, died at 11:55 p.m. Friday, February 20, 1998, at Mount Carmel Medical Center after a sudden illness. He had been in ill health for the last year.

He was born near Jet, Okla. on March 25, 1911, the son of Frank Clinton and Elizabeth Pearl (Dunnavant) Baker. Four months later the family moved to near Welch, Okla. When he was 13, the family moved to Edna. He attended and graduated from high school in Edna before going to college at Fullerton California. He and Vanonda P. Livingston were married on Aug. 12, 1934, in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

The couple moved to Boron, Calif. and worked for the Twenty Mule Team Borox Company. He became a real estate agent on Boron, and in 1937, he began the Baker & Baker Real Estate. He moved to Bakersfield, Calif. in 1945. In 1960, he moved to Pittsburg, Kan. and set up his real estate office west of town and became a part of the community. He owned the Whispering Pines Mobile Home Court for 23 years and owned and operated farms at the edge of town.

While in Bakersfield, he became President of the Real Estate Association, President of the YWCA, after he was the fundraiser to build the YMCA building. He became the Vice President of 11 Western states and was elected to the National Council. Mr. Baker served on the board of the Bakersfield Rescue Mission, President of the Bakersfield Christian Business Men's Association and Committee and a member of the First Baptist Church of Bakersfield, Calif. After moving to Pittsburg, he set up and organized the Baker Township Fire Department and became the first fire chief of Crawford County. He was active in the Pittsburg Kiwanis, President of the AARP #646, served as President of the Christian Businessmen's Association, and was a member of the First Christian Church of Pittsburg. Mr. Baker was also a proud breeder, owner, and trainer of a Champion Peruvian Paso Horses.

Survivors include his wife of the home, two sons, Mac L'Dean Baker of Bakersfield, Calif. and L. Wayne Baker of Springfield, Mo.; a daughter, La Vonna Lorraine Ihde of Snohomish, Washington; a sister, Stella Mae Baker of Frontenac, Kan.; seven grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Roscoe C Baker, Gail F. Baker and Leslie E Baker; two sisters, Hollys L Baker and Faye L. Kitchell; and a great grandson, Matthew Bauer.

Services were held on Wednesday, February 25th, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Pittsburg, with the Dr. Geoff Moran officiating. Burial was in the Edna cemetery in Edna, Kan.
