Near Waukegan, IL - "TERRIBLE CALAMITY ON LAKE MICHIGAN - Sinking of the Steamer Lady Elgin. Over Three Hundred Lives Lost. CHICAGO, Sept. 8 -- The steamer Lady Elgin was run into this morning by a schooner off Waukegan, and sunk within twenty minutes after the collision took place. She had upward of 350 passengers aboard, including several military and fire companies. Only seventeen passengers have been saved as far as known." (Nine miles off Winnetka, Illinois).
