"Bill" Symmonds

William Virgil "Bill" Symmonds, 75, of Keokuk, died Monday, June 12, 2006, at Lexington Square in Keokuk.

Born March 7, 1931, in Warsaw, Ill., he was the son of Virgil W. and Imogene Knight Symmonds. On Oct. 1, 1949, he married Shirley Ann Hasten. She died in February of 1991.

Mr. Symmonds owned and operated Bill's Auto Service (known as Symmonds Junkyard) in Hamilton, Ill., for over 20 years. After his retirement he moved to Phoenix where he worked for Auto Auction and Cox Communications for several years. They moved back to Keokuk in November of 2000.

He was a member of First Christian Church in Keokuk. He loved to play cards, read, hunt mushrooms and attend auctions.

Survivors include his second wife, Joyce; two sons, Terry "Corky" Symmonds and Jim Symmonds, both of Hamilton; two daughters, Lydia Kemper of West Point and Violet Steele of Keokuk; one stepson, Darin Conners of Williamstown, Mo., and stepdaughter, Sonia Conners of Arizona; 12 grandchildren; four step–grandchildren; 10 great–grandchildren; five sisters, Bernice Stoneking, Hazel Huffman and Julie Greer all of Keokuk, Mary Kratzer of Arizona and Ruth Evanchai of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, one stepson and one step–grandchild.

The family will meet with friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Keokuk.

The memorial service for Mr. Symmonds will be at 7 p.m. at First Christian Church, with the Rev. Bill Mitchell officiating.

Memorials have been established for County Hospice and First Christian Church.
