Guy was born in Abbeville at his grandmother's home on Nov. 5, 1919. He graduated from Baton Rouge High School and then, in 1941, from LSU as a mechanical engineer. Guy was elected a deacon in 1940, and later an elder by the First Presbyterian Church in Baton Rouge. He married Beth Salathe in 1942. After serving in the Navy Seabees in World War II, he was employed by Esso/Standard Oil (now ExxonMobil) until early retirement in the late '60s to work and minister to hundreds of children and adults at his beloved KUETA-T Camp in Norwood. A memorial service will be held at the KUETA-T on Sunday, Aug. 12, at 6 p.m. Guy is survived by his wife of 64 years, Beth Salathe Tanner, of Norwood; five daughters and their husbands, Mary Beth and Don Hey, of Norwood, Katherine and John Davis, of Zachary, Louise and Harold Mason, of Charlotte, N.C., Amy and Donald Matheny, of Nairobi, Kenya, and Leah and Doug Morgan, of Norwood; and son and his wife, Greg and Susan Tanner, of Osyka, Miss. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his father, Guy Gibson Tanner Sr.; mother, Anna Whitaker Tanner; and granddaughter, Deidre Elizabeth Joiner King. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Righteous Oaks Recovery Center, 5120 Pine Forest Road, Chunky, MS 39323 or Alzheimer's Services of the Capital Area, 3772 North Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA 70806.
