While his mother and her lover plotted to overthrow the king, John was placed in protective custody at the Tower of London, where he remained until released by the London mobs in 1327. With his brother now on the throne as Edward III, John was created earl of Cornwall in 1328 at the age of 12. He joined his brother in his attempts to renew the war with Scotland, and fought at the battle of Halidon Hill in 1333 and the Roxburgh Campaign in 1334-1335. He died while in Perth at the age of 20. Some 14th-century historians say that John was killed by his brother as punishment for the burning of Lesmahagow Abbey, but later historians agree that he probably died of fever. Although he was betrothed to Maria of Castile, the marriage never took place, and John died childless.
