Mr. Hardin was a farmer in Blue River Township of Hancock County and Hanover Township of Shelby County. He was a one-time candidate for state representative.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as lieutenant junior grade on USS New Mexico.

He graduated in 1932 from Westland High School and in 1936 from DePauw University as a rector scholar in economics.
