Graduated with the class of 1931 (graduate # 10279) from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis.

During World War II, he commanded the submarines USS Cod (SS-224), S-37, and USS Spearfish (SS-190). He was awarded the Navy Cross with two gold stars in lieu of second and third awards.

He retired Sep 1, 1970 with the rank of Rear Admiral.
