Charles J. Giek was born in Erie, Pennsylvania on Sep 22, 1920, the son of Walter C. Giek (1897 - 1965) and Elizabeth Wally Giek (1895 - 1954).

Charles graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School for Boys in 1939. He served as a cadet in the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, serving six months at sea.

He worked as a project manager for 30 years at Erie Forge and Steel. He also worked for Kondu Corporation for six years and as a sales manager for Swanson Erie Corporation.

Charles was extremely active in the Boy Scouts, attaining the rank of Star when he himself was a scout. As an adult, he served in scouting for over 60 years. He was active for 38 years with Troop 96, sponsored by St. George R.C. Church in Erie. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow, serving as Langundowi Lodge 46 adviser. He was selected as a Vigil Honor member, the order's highest level of membership.

He was active with the local Catholic Committee on Scouting, a group that integrates Catholic teaching with Scouting. For his work with this committee, Charles received the St. George Award, the committee's highest honor. He received the Silver Beaver Award from the French Creek Council, the highest award that a council can bestow. In 1994 he received his 60-year pin from the Boy Scouts of America.

Charles was also a lifetime member of the Erie Maennerchor and Erie Stamp Club.

Charles was a kind and soft-spoken man, and was an exemplary model for his scouts to follow as they approached manhood.

Charles died Nov 9, 2003 at Wedgewood Health Center in Lakeland, Florida. He was survived by his wife of 54 years, a daughter, and two sons. Also surviving were his sister, six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
