Robert E. "Doc" Irwin, 74, of Russellville, died on August 6, 2005, at the Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock. As a husband and father he was steadfast and loyal. He drew his greatest satisfaction in life from his family, his friends, practicing law and fishing.

He was born in Russellville on May 24, 1931, to Dr. Emmett Erastus Irwin and Bessie Catherine Gill Irwin Bowers. He graduated from Russellville High School in 1949 and attended Arkansas Tech University.

A veteran of the United States Air Force, he served in the Korean War and was decorated for heroism.

He earned his Law Degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law and was licensed to practice law in 1958.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father Mr. M.A. Bowers, his brother William Edward Irwin, and a granddaughter, Emily Katherine Cozart.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Sylvia Ann Butt Irwin of Russellville; seven children: John Robert Irwin, and his wife Jan of Morrilton; Martin Edward Irwin and his wife Michelle of Russellville; Catherine Ann Irwin and her partner Jill Duvall of Hillsborough, NC; Susan Lee Lutz and her husband CW4 George A. Lutz of Enterprise, AL; Nancy Beth Irwin Cozart and her husband Andy Cozart of Fayetteville; Timothy Seth Irwin and his wife Tatia of Russellville; and Brian Matthew Irwin of Dallas, TX. Survivors also include sixteen grandchildren: Jason Irwin, Michael Irwin, Jennifer Wilburn, Jacob Lutz, Clay Lutz, Teddie Bullock, Jodie Bullock, Ben Tucker, Josh Tucker, Benjamin Duvall-Irwin, Dylan Duvall-Irwin, Joshua Irwin, Drew Cozart, Jared Cozart, Evan Irwin, and Sophia Elaine Irwin; and three great grandchildren.

Active pallbearers will be John, Martin, Seth, and Brian Irwin, George Lutz and Andy Cozart. Honorary pallbearers will be Doc's twelve grandsons.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 10, 2005, at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Mackey Yokem. Burial with military honors provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Rogers-Rye Post 2283 will be in Pisgah Cemetery at Pottsville by Shinn Funeral Service. Visitation will be 6 to 8 P.M., Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Arkansas Children's Hospital, Post Office Box 2222, Little Rock, Arkansas 72003-9984; or the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 301 South Denver Avenue, Russellville, AR 72801.
