From WEAKLEY COUNTY, TENNESSEE, HISTORY AND FAMILIES- 1823 - 1998:

"Daniel D. BARGER, a millwright from Pennsylvania, came to Weakley County, TN about 1824 after marrying Elizabeth "Betsey" in Kentucky. It is thought that his family came to Pennsylvania from Alsace Lorraine area. They received a 200 acre land grant on Mud Creek. Court records show that Daniel
laid out and worked roads. He went by the name of BARGO. This spelling did not change until after his death in 1841. Family birth records show there were seven children. Three of the boys, John Nelson, James W. and William Gleason, served four years in the Confederate Army under Gen. N.B. Forrest, Duckworth Co. H. 7th TN Cavalry. William Gleason BARGER (b. 1840; d. 1906) youngest child of Daniel, married Sophronia Eudora CARLIN (b. 1851, d. 1944) November 1873, who was the daughter of the Rev. John Hugh Dillon CARLIN and Jane DODDS. After marriage he settled in the third district near Gardner. There were nine children: William, Laura Eula, Fannie, Thomas, Joseph, John, Vera, James and Dutch Gleason. William Gleason and his large family were successful farmers and had eight tobacco barns and a separate "bunk house" for his boys and the hired help. He was a deacon in the Cypress Creek Baptist Church and is listed in Goodspeeds 1887 History of Tennessee. Dutch Gleason (b. 1889, d. 1962) youngest son of William Gleason, married Genella STAFFORD (b. 1888, d. 1988) in April 1916, daughter of Armpsted and Virginia KENNEDY STAFFORD. Dutch was a member of the Martin
Concert Band. Children, James (b. 1819, d. 1919) and Frances Louise (b. 1921) married Gordon E. SMITH (b. 1910, d. 1996) Their daughter Catherine Annette married Richard McDERMOTT in 1985. Their children, Kathleen Clare (b. 1987) and Ian Edward Richard (b. 1989) McDERMOTT. Submitted by Frances
