John Dale Abbott, 62, of New Market, VA., formerly of Charlottesville, VA., died May 23, 2007, at his home.

John was born June 18, 1944, in Albermarle County, Va., and was the son of the late Wayne O. Abbott and Lucille Woodson Abbott.

He attended Clark County School in Charlottesville. After moving to New Market, he attended New Market High School and Stonewall Jackson High School.

He was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church, New Market, VA., volunteering time and services to his ministers.

John served six years in the U.S. Navy including four years on the USS Ranger CVA-61, and in Vietnam. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Memorial Foundation. He received a Certificate of Recognition from the Secretary of Defense for his service during the period of the Cold War in promoting peace and stability for his Nation.

John was employed for several years at Concord Mobile Homes until they closed. After six weeks training, he was hired by Kennametal, Inc. and was a certified MIG and TIG welder. He retired with 27 years service. Following retirement, he worked for the Shenandoah County School System for four years.

He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 166 and worked hard to establish the post in New Market.

John is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Carolyn F. Abbott.

He is also survived by brothers, Donald Wayne Abbott and Fred Allen Abbott, Houston, Texas; sisters, Joanne Bergara, Texas City, Texas and Betty Cheatwood, Prague, OK.; aunts, Frances W. Abbott and Elizabeth Brooke, Charlottesville, VA. Shelby W. Zedeker, Houston, Texas and Charlottesville, VA., and Jolene Ewell, Greensboro, NC; nephews, Ricky Abbott and Bryan Abbott, Texas City, Texas; nieces, Christine Bowers and Amy Fowler, League City, Texas.

John will be remembered by those who knew him as a man who loved the Lord and gave much of his time to helping others. He was an avid outdoorsman; hunting and fishing were his main sports. He was known for his precision welding in repairing firearms.

The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 27, at Reformation Lutheran Church, New Market. Burial will follow at Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, New Market, VA.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Theis Funeral Chapel, New Market, VA.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
