Mercia Thurston was born December 28, 1884, the daughter of Jason and Sarah (Shelton) Thurston. She recived her education in the schools of this area.
In 1902, she married Albert Winterowd. They lived on a farm southeast of Montour when he died in 1913, she moved to Montour and in 1918 she married Alonzo W. Hayes. They made thier home in Rice Lake, Wis.since that time. Mr Hayes died in 1950.
Surviving are two daughters and a son, Mrs. Grace Offord of Rice Lake Wis., Mrs Irene Nelson, New Richmond Wis. and Walter Winterowd of Cumbland Wis.; also a step son Russel Hayes of Marshalltown; four sisters and a brother, Mrs. C. W. Ellis, Mrs. Charles Goodenow, Mrs John Howard and Mrs. Zoe Mobley all of Marshalltown and John Thurston of Montour.
