One of Johnstown's Oldest Residents Passes Away of General Debility

Mrs. Eva Arthur Peden, widow of John Peden, passed away last evening at the Peden home, 825 Franklin Street, Sixth Ward, after an illness lasting but two days, in her 88th year. Her death was due to complication of diseases incident to old age. She was immediately put to bed and rapidly declined until the hour of her death, shortly before 5 o'clock last evening. The funeral will take place from the Peden home at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, the services to be conducted by the Rev. Oscar B. Emerson, pastor of the Grove Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church, with burial in Grandview Cemetery.

Eva Arthur was a daughter of John Arthur, II, who was born in Bedford County, February 20, 1793, and was married to Mary Oren, of York County, in December, 1815. John Arthur died here in December, 1876, and his wife in March, 1884. Eva Arthur was born in Bedford County April 15, 1825, and was married in Johnstown to John Peden on January 27, 1847, by the Rev. Daniel Patrick Mitchell, who served his first pastorate of the Franklin Street Methodist Episcopal Church in 1846. Mrs. Peden is survived by two sons, two daughters, ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, together with three sisters. The sons are Dr. Samuel A. Peden, of the Eight Ward, and Keesey C. Peden, of Pittsburgh, while the daughters are Mary, wife of David P. Petriken, of Cooper Avenue, and Miss Amanda Peden, at home. The great-grandchildren are Norma Louise and Mary Jeannett Petriken, children of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Petriken, of Coopersdale; Mary Alice G. Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Smith of Wisconsin, and Florence Hanks, daughter of Mrs. Edna Peden Hanks, of near Pittsburgh.

Mrs. Eva Arthur Peden was one of a family of nine children and is the sixth of the number to pass away. The surviving sisters, all of whom are younger than the deceased, are Mary Ann Arthur Baltzley, of the Fifth Ward; Mrs. Matilda Arthur Benshoff, of the Seventeenth Ward, and Mrs. Julia Ann Arthur Berkebile, of Pittsburgh. The brothers and sisters of Mrs. Peden who have passed away were Thomas Arthur, born in York County in January 1817 and died in Johnstown on July 24, 1893; Nancy Arthur Seigh, born in York County in May 1819, and died in Johnstown in July 1890; Elizabeth Arthur Manealy, born in York County on September 25, 1821 and died in Johnstown May 15 1849; John Arthur, III, born in York County February 1, 1824 and died in Johnstown December 1909, and Samuel Arthur, born in Johnstown on December 1, 1836 and died here in May 1902. Mrs. Baltzley, Mrs. Benshoff and Mrs. Berkebile were born in Johnstown, the former in August 1828; Mrs. Benshoff in April 1831, and Mrs. Berkebile in January 1834.

Mrs. Peden was at one time a member of the First United Brethren congregation but transferred her membership to the Franklin Street M. E. Church during the pastorate of the late Rev. Dr. William B. Watkins, some 30 years ago. Mrs. Peden became a member of the Moxham Methodist Church about 1906, when she and her daughter located in that district.
