Tilie went to work as a maid at the age of twelve or thirteen. She was living on the family farm in Normanna Township in October 1918 when the Cloquet fire swept through burning the farm house. Tille then moved into Duluth were she continued working as a maid until the outbreak of World War II. Tillie came west at the start of WWII and went to work for the Boeing Aircraft Company. At the conclusion of the war all the working women were laid off and Tillie found work doing laundry for the Veteran's Hospital in Seattle. Tille never married. In her later years, blind and in a nursing home she was visited weekly by her nephew Joel Mathison who never failed to bring his great aunt flowers.
