WORLD WAR II

"Alan G. Hodges, 78, of Lyndonville, succumbed to cancer and died Sunday evening, Jan. 1, 2006, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury.

He was born May 1, 1927, in Needham, Mass., son of the late Grant A. and Elsene L. (Dresser) Hodges. Alan was raised on his parents' dairy farm in North Danville with his brother Guy.

At the age of 17, Alan enlisted in the U.S. Navy and saw action in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he graduated from Vermont Technical College in 1947. On June 26, 1951, he married Virginia Hall of South Wheelock. Together they successfully operated a dairy farm in Sutton for 15 years.

In 1966, the Hodges launched their own farm supply merchandising business servicing over 300 farms in the Northeastern Vermont and New Hampshire area until they retired in 1992. An avid hunter, hiker and outdoorsman, Alan and his family enjoyed many memorable days at their camp on Walden Mountain. He was a member of the Masonic Crescent Lodge 66 of Lyndonville, and the VFW post 10038 of Lyndonville.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 55 years, Virginia H. Hodges of Lyndonville; their two children, Pamela Hodges-Woodworth and her husband Fred of East Montpelier, Vt., and Michael Hodges and his wife Cheryl of Pine Bush, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, Sarah, Fred, Kelly, Laurie, Joshua, Esther, Lydia and Grace; a great-granddaughter, Ava; a sister-in-law, Annabelle Hodges of North Danville, Vt.; nieces; nephews; and two very close friends, Leonard Cantin of East Haven, Vt., and Hap Hutchins of North Danville, Vt.

Besides his parents, Alan was predeceased by his brother, Guy A. Hodges.

Graveside services are being planned for Monday, May 1, 2006, at 11 a.m., at Lyndon Center Cemetery with military honors. There will be no visiting hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations made in Alan Hodges' memory may be directed to Caledonia Home Health Inc., P.O. Box 383, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819-0383.
