PEORIA, IL - Robert J. Edwards, 89, of Peoria died at 9:48 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home.

Robert was born on Sept. 20, 1924, in Peoria to Herbert Stanley and Gladys Catlin Edwards. He married Nola Pease in August of 1948 in Peoria. She preceded him in death on April 12, 1962. He later married Florine Strahm on April 25, 1964, in Berne, Ind. She preceded him in death on Feb. 22, 2013, in Washington.

Also preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Herbert O. Edwards Sr.

He is survived by his sons, John (Nita) Edwards of Peoria and Jerry (Judy of Mount Vernon, Mo.) Edwards of Peoria; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Birgam of Princeville; one brother, Charles (Ellora) Edwards of Elmwood; and several nieces and nephews. Robert also leaves behind family friends, Christy Rowland, Melissa Houston and Cynthia Volk.

Robert was a United States Army veteran, serving his nation honorably for 2 1/2 years in China as master sergeant during World War II and as a reservist during the Korean Conflict.

He was a graduate of Bradley University in 1949, and prepared taxes for 60 years, last serving the firm of Landy & Rothbaum in Peoria for 42 years.

He was a member of First Free Methodist Church in Peoria for 80 years and was the oldest member.

He served as the auditor of the Illinois/Wisconsin Conference, the North Central Conference of the Free Methodist Church of North America, and served on various committees of the local First Free Methodist Church. Robert was also a board member of Peoria Rescue Mission. He also served as a board member, committee person and treasurer of The Christian Center in Peoria for numerous years. Robert has also served many other Christian organizations over the years.

He was a member of Toastmasters and the YMCA, loved to play chess, enjoyed fishing, woodworking, flying model airplanes, and most of all he loved to spend time with family.

Burial, with military honors, will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
