"Although the death of Dr. Herman E. McMillin of Mahoningtown, which occured at 9:30 on Friday evening, was not entirely unexpected, nevertheless the news came as a shock to his many friends throughout both the city and county, where for the past 15 years he has been one of the most widely known and most skillful physicians.
Until a year ago, Dr. McMillin had enjoyed the best of health during his entire life. Of an energetic disposition, he worked incessantly at his practice day and night, until the break-down occurred. For several months he has been making a desperate struggle against death, suffering from Bright's disease, and although he rallied several times, the fatal disease had obtained such a firm foothold on his system that the efforts of the most skilled physicians were of no avail. Trips to health resorts gave him temproary vigor, but the relief was not permanent. For several weeks he had been slowly but surely sinking, and his friends have realized that death was but a matter of time.
Herman McMillin was born in March 1863, near Center U. P. Church in Shenango township. His parents were William and Eleanor McMillin, members of one of the pioneer families of Lawrence county. After receiving an education in the county schools, he attended the University of Cleveland, and graduated from the medical department of the Western University of Pennsylvania in 1863. He immediately settled down to practice in Mahoningtown. On account of his skill, incessant energy and patience, he soon became one of the most widely known physicians in his entire section.
He was twice married. His second wife, who was formerly Miss May McKinley, daughter of George McKinley of the West side, passed away about three years ago.
He is survived by one daughter, Elenora and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Emma, wife of W. H. Marshall of Chewton, Wesley McMillin, and Miss Adelaide McMillin, both of Wayne Township, John McMillin, Miss Jennie, Miss Matilda, Miss Martha, all of this city, and Mrs. Ellen, wife of John McMillin of Cleveland.
Dr. McMillin was a member of the Lodge of the Craft, No. 438, F & A M and had been permanently identified with various medical and research societies here and in other places."
