Enlisted in Company K, Kansas 5th Cavalry Regiment on 01 Oct 1861 and records show he was mustered into service the same day. His brother Homer Melton Howell enlisted in the same company on 10 Oct 1861. The records of the 5th Cavalry and pension records filed by his mother Mary E. (Martin) Howell show William Howell accidentally shot himself while on guard duty Huntsville, Missouri. The records show he dropped his Sharp's Carbine and the gun went off. He was left in the care of a farmer and died the next day.
