Ann Janette Hays (nee Crane) was born May 17, 1843. She joined the M.E. Church when a child and lived a consistent, faithful member until death. She was married to the now bereaved husband J.M. Hays April 4, 1863. To them were born 2 children. Dollie December 13, 1866, and Bertie November 10, 1872. Dollie died in Clinton, IN February 6, 1882, aged 15 years, and Bertie was drowned June 28, 1882, aged 9 years, thus leaving the grief stricken parents childless.

In the fall of 1887, they removed from Clinton to Dana, IN, where on January 28, 1890, after loving hands did all in their power, her pure spirit triumphantly quitted its earthly temple to join her children, leaving the husband and father alone. She died from the grip and pneumonia.

The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. A.W. Wood, of Lafayette, at the M.E. Church in Dana, after which her remains were laid to rest in the Clinton Cemetery. The large attendance at both places showed the high esteem in which she was held.
