Leonard Bankes, 91, Rushville, died at 1:40 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, at Heritage Manor South Nursing Home, Beardstown.

He was born Sunday, April 25, 1915, in Schuyler County, the son of John J. and Drucilla (Erwin) Bankes.

He first married Caroline Chipman, in 1939 at Palmyra, Mo. She preceded him in death June 11, 1991. He later married Nedra David on Nov. 19, 1966. She preceded him in death Jan. 8, 1999.

He is survived by one sister, Louise Gossage, Rushville; one grandson, Charles Lee (Sherry) Bankes, Galesburg; three great-grandchildren, Rhiannon, Melissa and Chelsea Bankes; one stepdaughter, Delores (John) Himegarner, Yates City; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; 12 nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wives and his parents, he was also preceded in death by one son, Charles Lee Bankes, two infant daughters, Judy Kay and Connie Sue, three sisters, Bessie Gilmore, Minnie Butler, Clarine Palmer, one brother, Harold Bankes, and two stepchildren, Robert Jordan and Patricia Sours.

He attended Smithfield School in Fulton County. He farmed and worked for the Tomlinson Coal Mine and the Cudahy Packing Co. both in Rushville, and McGraw-Edison in Macomb, retiring in 1977.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, at Worthington Funeral Home, Rushville with the Rev. Mike Hall officiating.

Burial will be in Rushville City Cemetery, Rushville.
