The daughter of Lilian Singleton and Thomas Hollway Coker of Hartsville, she was born Aug. 1, 1914. She attended schools in Hartsville and graduated from high school in Bennettsville. She graduated with honors from Converse College in Spartanburg in 1936. She was past president of the Converse Alumnae Association and received the Converse Distinguished Alumnae Award in 1976.
She was married to Robert Woods Twitty of Darlington in 1936 at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Hartsville. They lived in Laurens until 1940 when they moved to Marion, N.C. As a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Mrs. Twitty served as president of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW), taught Sunday School, served on the Altar Guild and was active in the Diocese of Western North Carolina. She also served as chairman of the McDowell County Library Board, served on the Pisgah Girl Scout Council and was a volunteer for Marion General Hospital.
Following Mr. Twitty's retirement from Marion Manufacturing Company in Marion, the couple moved to Myrtle Beach in 1981. As a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Mrs. Twitty was chairman of the Altar Guild, and past president of the ECW. She was also a volunteer with Grand Stand Medical Auxiliary, Mobile Meals, United Way of Horry County, Associated Charities and the Community Soup Kitchen.
Mrs. Twitty was predeceased by one daughter, Mary Twitty Frye Hatcher. She is survived by four daughters, Martha and Bob Erwin of Greenwood, Ellen and Joe McCotter of Washington, N.C., Lilian and Calvin Welch of Midland, N.C., Bobbie and George Mattiske of Myrtle Beach; and one son-in-law, the Rev. John Hatcher of Arnold, Md.; and her brother, Thomas A. Coker and wife Peggy of Greenville.
