During World War II, she was an Army nurse aboard a hospital ship in the Atlantic and Pacific. After the war, she was a field nurse for the Oklahoma department of health.
In 1963, she moved to the Washington area and began working as a school nurse in Arlington. She retired in 1983. She did volunteer work for Meals on Wheels and the thrift shop at Fort Myer, and she was on the board of EX-POSE, an organization that worked for the rights of former military spouses.
Her marriage to Bill W. Byrd ended in divorce.
