Amber Gross was shot to death by Wade Jenkauski, 19, who subsequently attempted suicide. Bemidji police received a 911 call with some sounds but no words. Authorities responded to the residence where the call originated and found Amber in the bathroom, dead from a gunshot wound. Police then spotted Jenkauski crawling on the bedroom floor, with part of his head blown away by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was in critical condition at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth. Amber’s mother stated in an interview, “She was a hard worker. She was a certified nurse’s aid. It’s a tragedy. It was a bad relationship from the start.” She stated that Jenakauski was abusive towards her daughter. Wade Jenakauski pleaded guilty to second-degree homicide and was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
