Former Paper Mill Employee Succumbs After Long Illness
James Columbus Church, widely known Tuscaloosa resident and formerly an employee at the Gulf States Paper Corporation mill, died today (Wednesday, January 3, 1940) after an illness extending for 16 months. His passing was unexpected, despite his prolonged ill health.
Mr. Church was a native of Perry County and the oldest in a family of 12 children. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Church (Martha Rogers).
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Cross Ward Church, two sons, Claude P. Church and Carlos Resse Church, and five daughters, Mrs. R.T. (Mary Lou) Ingram, Mrs. P.L. (Mattie Sue) Standifer, Mrs. L.W. (Mildred) Lawrence, Mrs. J.Q. (Maude) Adams and Mrs. Harold (Hettie Austine) Panabaker, all of Tuscaloosa. Twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive, and a sister, Mrs. T.A. Murray, resides in Selma.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday (January 4, 1940) from the Brent Presbyterian church in Bibb County, with internment by Jones and Spigener at Bethel Cemetery, also in Bibb County.
The active pallbearers will be his nephews, Henry James, John James, W.B. Faucett, Floyd Faucett, R.S. James and Maurice Bamburg. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Steele, Jim Steele, Wood Pierson, W.H. Cooper, G.J. Partridge, W.F. Murphy, J.W. Mason, Cross Steele, C.C. James and Victor Hunt.
