Sylvia Rae Nelson was born January 7, 1942, a daughter of Edward and Eunice (Olson) Nelson, in Tolley, ND. She was baptized at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Kenmare, and was raised and educated in Norma and Kenmare.
Sylvia married Lyle Kilbourn on September 28, 1957, in Havre, Montana. They had made their home in rural Minot, and later Des Lacs, ND. In 1980, she and Lyle made their home in Minot. Sylvia had worked as a cook and a bartender at the original Speedway Café for many years, as well as the 52 Club, the 83 Club, Tony's Tavern, and the Ranger Lounge. In 1989, she worked at the VFW Club in Minot and was still working there at the time of her death.
Sylvia was a member of Eagles Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary, and had been attending Zion Lutheran Church in Minot.
She enjoyed reading, playing Bingo, collecting clowns and thimbles, reading horoscopes, and her pets, Oscar, Lexus and Lady. She also enjoyed friendships developed at the VFW Club, taking walks with her family and friends, but most of all loved spending time with her family, traveling to visit her children, and the holidays.
Sylvia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who was willing to help her children in time of need.
Her loving family includes: husband of 51 years, Lyle, Minot; sons, Ed (Retta) Kilbourn, Oklee, MN, Steve (Lorie) Kilbourn, Burlington, ND, and Duane (Julie) Kilbourn, Tucson, AZ; daughters, Laurie (Peter) LeCapitaine, Appleton,WI, and Denise (Jeffrey) Nabozny, San Angelo, TX; brother, Leroy Nelson, Ogden, UT; sister, Barbara (Robert) Bokovoy, Soldotna, AK; twelve grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friends, Debbie Mahoney, Debbie Ohlhauser, and Edith Satcho.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; infant twin daughters, Marcy and Michelle, two infant granddaughters, Nikki and Shanette, infant grandson, Kellen, and great niece, Amber.
Funeral: Thursday, July 9, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, ND.
Visitation: Wednesday from 2 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Officiant
