John was the son of Samuel Alexander McLarty and Mary Elizabeth Hildebrand McLarty. He married Ada Byron Nolan on April 13, 1879. They were the parents of five children: Rosa Beatrice, Margaret Effie, Claude, Flora Bell, and Eugene.
John worked most of his life for Southern Railway. He died of cancer at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home (hospice) in Atlanta in April of 1942 -- just two days before his and Ada's sixty-third anniversary.
