John Taylor Schmitt was inducted into the Marine Corps on Sept 8, 1942. He was killed in Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on March 13, 1945. His body was returned for burial on Jan 14, 1949.
He spent a little over a year on Guadalcanal and Bougainville; was sent to The U.S. for a few months and returned to the South Pacific where he was in the battle of Iwo Jima where he was killed in the 26th day of fighting.
He received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.
