FORMER BUSINESS MAN TO BE BURIED TODAY


Abner Gayle Mercer, 65, well known former merchant and retired funeral director died Thursday morning at 6:15 at a local hospital where he was taken recently after several years of ill health.

He retired from business in 1947 because of the state of his health, which steadily declined despite all medical help. He had been critically ill the last several weeks, and death was not unexpected.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:00 am from the Brenham Funeral Home with Rev. E.O. Dubberly, methodist minister of Texas City officiating, assisted by Rev. Charlie Lamb, pastor of the Methodist church if Brenham. Burial will be at Prairie Lea Cemetery.

Services at the grave will be conducted by Hubert Lodge No. 67, AF & AM of Chappel Hill. The following will serve as pallbearers; Falcorn Shaver, Will Schaer Sr., Harry Lesser, Lewin Routt, all of Chappel Hill; Oscar Meyer, A.M. Rogers, Herman L Zschappel, and Travis Phillips.

Mr. Mercer, son of the late Thomas Abner Mercer and Maria Louise Perkins Mercer, was born at Chappel Hill March 20, 1886. He attended the Chappel Hill public schools and Hills Business College of Waco. April 9, 1908 he was married to Miss Mattie Smith of Branchville, Texas with Rev. H.A. Walker, Methodist minister, officiating.

He was associated with his father and brother in the mercantile and farming business at Chappel Hill under the firm of T.A. Mercer and Sons. Twenty-two years ago he moved to Brenham and in 1941 he purchased the funeral business from Ernest Hermann and became associated with Harold Graber under the firm of Mercer and Graber. In 1947 he retired from business due to ill health.

He was a member of the Methodist church of Brenham and Hubert Lodge No. 67 AF & AM of Chappel Hill. Prior to ill health, he was active in the Brenham Lions Club serving as a director and also was a director of Brenham Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors are his widow, three sons, Smith A Mercer of Belair; Gayle R Mercer of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and Major Tim Mercer, Fort Belvoir, Va.; five grandchildren, Smith Mercer Jr, Gayle R Mercer Jr, Thomas Frank Mercer, Marylin Mercer, Thomas N Mercer II, and one aunt, Mrs. Bell Chritzberg of Georgetown, Texas.
