On 16 May 1850 Richard married Nancy J. Johnson in LaRue County, Kentucky. Nancy J. Johnson was a daughter of John A. Johnson, b. 1800 in Kentucky and Rhoda Pelce, b. in Kentucky or Maryland. Nancy died 15 Aug 1856 leaving Richard with 4 small children. Richard then married Malvina (Lou, Luserma) ? and they had 11 more children.
In the 1860 LaRue County census, Richard Wise was family 636. He was 35 years old and now married to Malvina, 28. The children at home were: John A, 9; M. E., 6; J. R., 5; W. T., 4; Lloyd, 1; and Sarah, 3 months. Living in the home was Richard's brother, Wm. W. Wise, age 22.
In the 1870 LaRue County Census for the Buffalo district, Richard M. Wise, was family 9. He was 45 years old and his wife, Luserna, was 34. The children at home were: John A., 19; Mary E., 16; James R., 14; William G., 13; Lloyd, 10; Sarah, 9; Hardin, 7; George, 5; Richard H., 3; Martha, 2; and Victoria, age 6 months.
