William Cornelius Grunert was the eldest of five known children of Maximillian Eugene Grunert (1823-1887) (went by Eugene or Max?) and his first wife, Emma Theresa Pfohl (1830-1862), who married 22 Apr 1851 at Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. After Emma died Maximillian remarried to Maria Susanna Butner (1829-1869) on 26 Apr 1864 at Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina and had three known additional children.

William married Adelaide Louisa Brietz (1857-1948) on 12 Feb 1880 at Forsyth County, North Carolina. William and Adelaide were the parents of four known children, namely:

1. Robert Eugene Grunert (1881-1977)
2. Mary Louise Grunert (1886-1970)
3. Emma Sophia Grunert (1890-1891)
4. Francis William Grunert (1893-1980)
