Rae Shermeyer Foutz
ANCHORAGE, AK Rae Shermeyer Foutz passed away on November 23, 2011, at her home in Anchorage, AK. She was born on November 25, 1946, in Bozeman, Montana, eldest daughter of Vernon L. and Hilda (Keeports) Shermeyer and the older of identical twins. After a childhood spent in Windsor Township and Red Lion, she graduated Red Lion High School, class of 1964. She earned a BS in chemistry from Lebanon Valley College (LVC), Annville, and also attended graduate school at the University of Washington. Following marriage to her college sweetheart Paul Foutz in 1968 in Red Lion, they moved to the Seattle, WA., area. In 1975, they relocated to Anchorage, AK, where for the next 30 years, Rae worked for the City of Anchorage, retiring as a budget analyst. For twenty-one years, she volunteered in both the Anchorage and Nome Race Headquarters of the Iditarod, Alaska's 1000-mile sled dog race. In Nome, she was affectionately known as one of the Dog Lot Twins. Other volunteer activities included the Multiple Sclerosis Anchorage Bike Ride and fund-raising for the local public radio/television stations. She walked in several American Cancer Society Relays for Life, the Women's Heart Run, and the American Heart Association's Heart Walk and Heart Run. She is survived by her husband, Paul Foutz, Anchorage, AK; sisters, Kay Arnold, San Leandro, Calif., and Diana Shermeyer, Alexandria, Va.; half-brother, Mark Shermeyer Murrow, Catonsville, Md.; and step-brother, Richard Stonbraker, Bristow, Va. Following cremation, she will be laid to rest in Red Lion Cemetery, next to her mother and maternal grandparents. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that a remembrance in Rae's name be sent to the American Cancer Society (1-800-227-2345 or P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718); any other cancer research organization; or Providence Hospice, 3435 E. Tudor Rd., Anchorage, AK 99507-1482.
