Jane B. Plaisted was the daughter of William Plaisted and Nancy Smith. She married Stephen Hawkins in 1833. She was the mother of at least five children.

Her husband and three sons served their country in the Union Army during the Civil War. Her husband died in 1862 in LA, and two of her sons died the following year. Son William H. was wounded at Chancellorsville, VA, and died in Falmouth, VA. Son James was wounded in the Battle of Gettysburg, where he died. Another son, Lorenzo, also served with his brothers, but survived and lived until 1916.

She gave her husband and two sons for the Union Cause.
