John was drafted into the US Army while living in St Louis.
He arrived in Vietnam 30 June 1967 and was assigned to B Company, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 173rd Airborne Division, USARV. John died as a result of gunshot wounds to the body from hostile rifle fire in the vicinity of Hill 823, 11 kilometers south southwest of Ben Het, during Operation Mac Arthur.
Survived by his parents, Mr & Mrs Robert Barnes, and his son; Ricky V Bartley of 4301 Blair Avenue, St Louis, Missouri, his brothers and sisters; Eddie, Louis, Mike, Margaret and Tina.
