John died as a result of gunshot wounds to the body from hostile rifle fire in the vicinity of Hill 823, 11 kilometers south southwest of Ben Het, during Operation Mac Arthur.
Survived by his parents, Mr & Mrs Robert Barnes, and his son; Ricky V Bartley of 4301 Blair Avenue, St Louis, Missouri, his brothers and sisters; Eddie, Louis, Mike, Margaret and Tina.
