Nelson Napoleon Watson VanRansaler Burns. (Note the spelling of the last name on the original gravestone (Burnes) and initials (N.N.W.V). The same initials are on Nelson's discharge papers from the Civil War. (new gravestone is missing the initial V and has incorrect death date and year).

Nelson and wife Mariah and family were living 2 doors from Nicholas and Lydia Burns, and 3 doors from John and Margaret Burns in Clinton County, Ohio in the 1850 Census (his brothers). He is listed in the 1860 Clinton County, Ohio Census and in the 1870 Parke County, Indiana Census.

He served as a Pvt. in the Webster Thomas Company E - 47th Regiment Ohio during the Civil War. He enrolled in the Civil War on June 15, 1861 and was discharged on October 6, 1862 at Gallipolis, Ohio. He received a $100.00 Bounty (pension) in 1872 for his service. I have always been told his discharge paper was signed by Abraham Lincoln's Secretary of War, Edwin McMasters Stanton, but I cannot find the signature on the document. He was discharged by a surgeon's certificate of disability.

His full name was written on a note given to me by my Aunt Pauline Kent, Nelson's Great Grandaughter, and confirmed by her sister Frances Kent Schrader, my mother, also a Great Grandaughter.

I have not found his initials spelled out anywhere else.

I question my Aunt and Mother's remembrances as my GG-Grandfather Albert's middle name was Newton. (Assuming, therefore, that Nelson's middle name might have been Newton or perhaps Nicholas after his father). Napoleon is a complete mystery to me as is VanRansaler.

Records from the Rockville Library show Nelson and wife Maria/Mariah with the same death date in 1901.

My records show his death date as February 27, 1876.

The new gravestone says his death was in 1873, but the newspaper obituary is 1876.

His obituary is in the Rockville Republican Page 8, dated March 15, 1876.

Nelson was 33 in the 1850 Clinton, County Ohio Census, 44 in the 1860 Clinton County, Ohio Census, 54 in the 1870 Parke County, Indiana Census, so I am estimating his birth date around 1816-1817.

The gravestone is shown to the right and below (taken in 1982) has been removed from the gravesite and replaced with the new gravestone to the right and above about 2008-2009.

The location of the original stone is unknown. We found old original headstones thrown into a pile behind the Rockville Police Department on Virginia Street.

At a regular meeting of Parke Grange the following resolutions expressive of our feelings at the death of N.N.W. Burns was adopted.

Whereas, It has pleased God to lay His hand upon us as an Order, in removing by death our co-worker, Bro. Burns; therefore be it resolved,

1. That we as a Grange recognize in this dispensation of Divine Providence the chastening hand of our All-wise Heavenly Father and seek for men to say thy will be done.
2. That we hereby record our testimony to the worth and good character of our deceased brother, and to his good standing as a member of our Order.
3. That we in this afflictive dispensation, hear the voice of the Blessed master saying, "Be ye also ready," that ye may meet him in that temple above.
4. That we hereby extend to the family of the deceased our heartfelt sympathy in their sad bereavement.
5. That a copy of these resolutions be presented to the family of the deceased, also to each of the county papers for publication.
