District Judge, Charles B. Elwell, one of Montana's most highly respected jurists who served more than 40 consecutive years as judge of the 12th Judicial District, died Saturday night at the Havre hospital after a brief illness. He was 85. At the time of his retirement in 1967 Elwell's term of office was thought to be the longest of any U.S. district judge. He began his career as district judge of Blaine, Hill and Liberty counties in 1929.

He was born in New Orleans December 28, 1888. He was a graduate of the Georgetown University Law School. He moved to Havre from Massachusetts in 1913. He began his law career in Havre as a partner in a firm with H.S. Kline. He was a former Havre City Attorney and he served as a U.S. Land Commissioner soon after moving to Havre. Judge Elwell was one of the organizers of the Marias Irrigation Project. He was well known for his work in Scouting and Masonic activities. He was chairman of the board of trustees of the old Kennedy Deaconess Hospital for many years.

His wife, Harriet, died in 1967. He is survived by a nephew. Dr. Almont Elwell, D.M.D., of Wenham, Massachusetts.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Van Orsdel Methodist Church in Havre. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Havre.
