Alvin Michael Bean is the son of Michael Mordica Martin Bean and Rebecca Ann (Northcutt) Bean of Atchinson, Kansas.

On April 24, 1895, in Atchinson Kansas, Alvin married Phoebe Ellen Branam, born October 7, 1876, died January 8, 1949, daughter of James William Branam and Kezelan Emmeline Butcher Branam, who were farmers at Parnell, Kansas.

After their marriage, they operated the Old Bean Homestead near Atchinson for eleven years and then moved to St Joe, where he was a merchant. They later returned to the farm, west of Atchinson and at Effington.

They retired after 28 years to their home at Atchinson, where they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary, when Phoebe was in poor health. On this occasion, all of their children, who had scattered, plus grand-children, for a total of 22 people had an anniversary dinner at the Bean home.

On this occasion, Phoebe told the newspaper reporter the happy incident of how she and Alvin met. She was out riding on her horse, and by accident she was thrown from her horse just as her future husband rode by. Of course, as a true gentleman, he dismounted and assisted her in remounting her steed. A romance developed.

The children of this marriage are:

Flossie Viola Bean, born January 27, 1896, married Egbert Ray Berry;

James Bean, born August 2, 1898, died July 19, 1955, married Louise Yaple;

Emma Bean, born February 14, 1901, died 1977, in Fall City, Nebraska, married Ralph Kieffer, married second, A.E. Elam;

Perry Edgual Bean, born August 22, 1905, died Febuary 9, 1984, in Wichita, Kansas, married Mary Vanderwelde;

Maude Bean, born April 19, 1908, died February 9, 1984, in Wichita Kansas, married Homer Ferguson;

Robert Michael Bean, born September 10, 1923, married Lucie Rentfrow.

Alvin and Phoebe are buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery, in Atchinson, Kansas. There are very nice photographs of each of them on their Find A Grave memorials: [1]
