∼James, a farmer and later a teacher and school principal by profession, was the son of Albert Sale and Mary Pollard. He enlisted at West Point, Virginia as a Corporal in Company "H", 53rd Virginia Infantry on 26 July 1861. After being promoted through the ranks to 1st Lieutenant, he was captured at Gettysburg in July 1863 and imprisoned the rest of the War.
